Storm and Hail Damage
Texas storms can roll in fast and leave a lot behind. Spring is the heart of hail season across much of the state, but strong thunderstorms, high winds, and hail can show up in other months too. If a storm just came through your area, here's how to handle it.
Safety first
- Stay off the roof. Wet, damaged shingles are slick, and storm damage can weaken the deck. Leave the climbing to someone with the right equipment.
- Watch for downed power lines and stay well away from them. Report them to your utility.
- If water is coming in near light fixtures or outlets, turn off power to that area at the breaker if you can do so safely.
- Check your attic and ceilings from inside for drips, wet insulation, or new stains.
Protect your home from further damage
Your insurance policy likely expects you to take reasonable steps to prevent more damage after a storm. That can mean:
- Putting buckets or towels under drips and moving furniture and valuables out of the way
- Covering damaged areas temporarily to keep rain out, but only if it can be done safely and without climbing onto a wet or damaged roof
- Keeping receipts for anything you buy or pay for to protect the home

Signs of hail damage
Hail damage isn't always obvious from the ground. On the roof, we look for:
- Dark spots or "bruises" where granules have been knocked off
- Soft spots on shingles that feel spongy when pressed
- Cracked or split shingles
- Exposed fiberglass mat showing through
Around the house, a few clues can hint that the roof took a hit:
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, and metal roof vents
- Dinged-up AC unit fins
- Dents on mailboxes, patio furniture, or cars
- Heavy piles of granules at the bottom of downspouts
Signs of wind damage
- Missing shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard
- Shingles that are creased, lifted, or flipped back
- Broken seal strips that let tabs flap in the wind
- Damaged ridge caps or loose flashing
Document what you see
Take photos and videos of damage you can see safely from the ground, including dents on gutters, siding, and anything else. Write down the date and time of the storm. These records help if you decide to file a claim. Our insurance claim help page explains how that generally works.
A word about storm chasers
After a big storm, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Some are honest. Others do quick, low-quality work and are gone before problems appear. A few simple steps protect you:
- Ask for a local address and phone number, and check them.
- Ask for proof of insurance.
- Don't sign anything on the spot or under pressure.
- Be cautious about paying large amounts upfront.
- Read any contract carefully before you sign, especially one tied to an insurance claim.
