Courthouse square and a famous horned toad

Few Texas towns have a mascot quite like Old Rip. As the story goes, a horned lizard was sealed in the cornerstone of the county courthouse in 1897, and when that building came down in 1928, the crowd watched it start to breathe. Old Rip became a national celebrity, and his remains still rest in a small casket inside the current Eastland County Courthouse. That Art Deco building, with its brick walls, terra cotta trim, and central tower, opened by the end of 1928 and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

Eastland sits at the junction of State Highways 6 and 112, just northwest of I-20, and the old Bankhead Highway once ran right past the courthouse on its way toward Cisco. The town grew up around the Texas and Pacific Railway and later boomed with oil and gas in the 1910s and 1920s.

What Eastland roofs look like

Around the courthouse square and the neighborhoods closest to downtown, you'll find older homes with steeper rooflines, porches, and additions built over many decades. Roofs like these can have tricky intersections where a newer section meets the original house, and older flashing at chimneys and walls is a frequent source of trouble. Farther out, newer houses and rural homes often have broad, simple roof planes that take the full force of wind crossing open pasture. Storefronts and commercial buildings downtown bring flat-looking parapet edges and long drainage runs into the picture.

Weather that tests a roof

Spring is the heart of severe weather season in this part of Texas. Thunderstorms can drop hail, unload heavy rain in a short time, and push gusty winds that lift shingle edges. By midsummer, the challenge shifts to heat and sun, which bake shingles and wear away the granules that protect them. Winters are generally mild, but freezes and the occasional ice event can widen a crack that started in spring.
